Johnson gifted $100,000 to endow the Southern Methodist University (SMU) scholarship for students who are active, veteran, retired or reserve members of the U.S. military or their children. To honor Johnson’s legacy, CCBA provided the first donation to make the fund immediately operational so that scholarships can be awarded to students for the 2018-2019 school year.
“Congressman Sam Johnson has made a tremendous, positive impact on our community that will continue to be felt by generations to come. His distinguished legacy endures with his scholarship for military students which will widen opportunities for deserving men and women who have unselfishly served our country,” said CCBA Chairman and President, Capital One Financial Services Sanjiv Yajnik.
The community was invited to this event which celebrated Johnson’s achievements before he retires next year. The Plano West High School color guard presented the flags. Public officials, SMU staff, and other attendees listened to Johnson’s personal story and heard about Johnson’s newly established scholarship fund. The reception and scholarship announcement honored and will continue his legacy of service. Johnson endowed the scholarship at SMU, his alma mater, where he began his Air Force career in the ROTC and courted his beloved wife, Shirley, of 65 years. There is a strong population of military students enrolled in SMU.
Johnson received the 2016 CCBA Leadership Award for his extraordinary dedication to our country and North Texas.
